FAQ QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: What is dragon boat racing?

Dragon boat racing is a team paddling sport originating in China over 2,000 years ago. A dragon boat is a long, narrow vessel decorated with a dragon head and tail, powered by a crew of up to 20 paddlers, a drummer who sets the pace, and a steersperson who guides the boat. Paddlers work in sync to drive the boat forward as fast as possible. It’s one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world — and one of the most fun.

Q: Who are the Pittsburgh Paddlefish?

The Pittsburgh Paddlefish are a competitive and community-focused dragon boat team based in Pittsburgh, PA. We paddle three times a week at the Three Rivers Rowing Association facility in Millvale, just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. We welcome adults who love being on the water, pursuing fitness, and the camaraderie of a great team. We race locally, nationally, and internationally.

Q: Do I need experience to join the Pittsburgh Paddlefish?

No experience is necessary. If it’s your first time in a dragon boat, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to paddle safely and confidently from day one. All equipment is provided. If you’re willing to show up and give it your best, you’re our kind of paddler.

Q: How do I join the Pittsburgh Paddlefish?

The best way to get started is to come out for a practice and try it for yourself. Email us at pghpfish@gmail.com to let us know you’re interested, and we’ll set you up with a visit. After a few practices, you can choose a membership that works for you — full year, water season only, or winter indoor training only.

Q: When and where does the team practice?

We practice three times a week at the Three Rivers Rowing Association (TRRA) in Millvale, PA. On-water practices run from April through October (weather dependent). During the winter months, we stay in shape with indoor training using paddling and rowing ergs, weights, and core exercises at the TRRA facility.

Q: How much does it cost to join?

Membership fees vary depending on the level you choose. Options include a full-year membership (which includes a full TRRA membership), a water-season-only membership, and a winter training-only option. Contact us for current pricing details — we’re happy to walk you through what each option includes.

Q: What should I wear and bring to my first practice?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing you don’t mind getting wet, and bring a change of clothes for after practice. Closed-toe shoes are required on the dock. We provide all paddling equipment including life jackets and paddles. Bring water, sunscreen, and a positive attitude.

Q: Is dragon boat racing a good workout?

Absolutely. Dragon boating is a full-body workout that engages your core, arms, back, and legs simultaneously. Regular paddling builds cardiovascular endurance, upper body and core strength, and coordination. Many paddlers find it far more enjoyable than going to the gym — because it never feels like exercise when you’re flying across the water with a great team.

Q: Does the Pittsburgh Paddlefish compete in races?

Yes! The Paddlefish race at the local, regional, national, and international levels. We participate in events like the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival and travel to competitions in cities such as Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Toronto, and others. Competitive paddling is a big part of what we do — but you don’t have to be elite to race with us.

Q: What is the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival?

The Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival is an annual event featuring competitive and recreational dragon boat races on Pittsburgh’s waterways. It draws community, corporate, sport, and breast cancer survivor teams from across the region. It’s a fantastic introduction to the sport if you’ve never seen a dragon boat race before. The Paddlefish participate each year.

Q: How old do I have to be to join?

The Pittsburgh Paddlefish is an adult team. We welcome paddlers 18 and older. All members must be comfortable on the water and able to swim.

Yes — we encourage it! Come out for a few sessions before deciding whether to join. We want you to feel confident that dragon boating with the Paddlefish is right for you. Just email us at pghpfish@gmail.com to set up your first visit.

Q: Do you have a team for breast cancer survivors?

Pittsburgh also has dedicated breast cancer survivor dragon boat programs, including Pittsburgh Hearts of Steel, which operates out of the same facility. We’re proud to be part of a broader Pittsburgh dragon boating community that supports survivors.
